Katla Ice Cave is a great place to go ice cave exploring in Iceland during the summer. Plus I have a coupon code for you! It had been on my list to see Kata Ice Cave for a while, and in late May 2024, I finally had the chance to do so. And I’m happy to say I wasn’t let down. I loved it so much!
As a whole, ice caves are a beautiful sight. Glacier meltwater that flows under or through a glacier leaves an opening or a cave inside the glacier. There are many different types of caves, each in its own size and shape.
The melting and reshaping of glaciers is an ongoing process. Consequently, the ice caves also do. October through November through March is when you may explore Iceland’s ice caves. The ice caves have stabilized to the point where they are safe for visitors after the weather has been persistently cold. Katla Ice Cave, on the other hand, is open all year. Which is fantastic news, isn’t it?
All seasons are suitable for exploring Katla Ice Cave.
You may wonder, though, why. The Katla Ice Cave is open all year; why is that? There is a fundamental difference between viewing a major ice cave in winter on Vatnajökull Glacier and Katla Ice cave in July. I’m no geologist, but I observed it after visiting both.
There is only one large ice cave on Vatnajökull Glacier. To put it more accurately, you essentially make your way into the glacier. You step into a confined area that, if summer melts it, could collapse on you. Therefore, it is highly recommended to keep it closed during the heat.
Katla Ice Cave: What to Anticipate
But the Katla Ice Cave is more of a glacial adventure, complete with a smaller cave. All over the “cave area” are stunning rock formations that glacial meltwater has sculpted.
Yes, there is also a lovely cave with walls made of white, blue, and black ice. So pretty. But that’s only a small part of the experience. It wasn’t the whole thing. Additionally, that cave’s walls are very thick, so you don’t have to worry about it falling apart while you’re inside .
Situated next to one of Iceland’s largest volcanoes!
In Vík, a small town on the south coast, my husband and I met our guide and other travelers. Vík is the white church with the red roof that you may have seen online. It stands on a hill above a small town. Many people like to take pictures of this church and the view of the ocean from it.
Anyway, we took a super jeep from Vík to get to the glacier. Since I was being honest, I forgot to time the drive from Vík, but I think it took about 30 minutes each way.
The road goes through Mýrdalssandur, a black desert, for most of the trip. The sand here comes from the Katla volcano, which is under the ice. One of the biggest volcanoes in Iceland is Katla. When it bursts, it sends huge glacial floods out to sea from the melting glacier. The Mýrdalssandur was formed by a lot of sand that came with the water.
There is a lot of ash and sand on the ice itself because Katla Ice Cave is right next to Katla. Don’t worry, though; the volcano hasn’t exploded since 1918, and we’ll know when it does in advance!
But this means that the ice won’t be white and shiny. It’s really dirty, but this black and white look makes it look so cool .
A mix of an easy glacier hike and exploring an ice cave
I chose to call this tour a glacial adventure, as I said before. I see it as a mix between hiking on a glacier and going to an ice cave. You walk right on the ice during this trip. Like when you walk on a glacier. When you go to the big ice cave I talked about above, you don’t do that. You can book a real ice hike, but this walk is much shorter and easier. For the record, I strongly suggest that you do. I love mountains and everything they have to offer so much. But that’s not the point.
In short. You can hike on a glacier and discover an ice cave on this tour. You will also see the different shapes that water has made in the ice all around you. A simple hike up a mountain and a cave made of ice. Two for the price of one!
I also want to say how much I loved the mountains around the glacier; they were a huge treat. They seem like they belong in a fairy tale. Something from a different world. These mountains are so different from the “normal” ones here in Iceland. I think that’s worth a lot of extra points.

- Most people book this tour as a meet-up tour, but you can also book it from Reykjavík. After that, you’ll meet the guide in Vík, just like I did.
- You only need to bring good, strong shoes and clothes that are right for the weather. When you go to Iceland, I always tell you to bring layers. No matter the time of year.
- Don’t worry about that; you’ll get a helmet and boots there.
